Long Island, New York
Long Island, fittingly named because it is approximately 118 miles long and only 20 miles wide, is rich in historical and natural beauty. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Long Island Sound, the area is most famous for its sandy white beaches but its moderate climate and plentiful recreation facilities promote the enjoyment of all kind of sports and activities.
Long Island is divided into two counties: Nassau and Suffolk. Nassau County is comprised of the three towns of Oyster Bay, Hempstead and North Hempstead while Suffolk contains Babylon, Brookhaven, East Hampton, Huntington, Islip, Riverhead, Smithtown, Shelter Island, and Southampton as well as two Indian reservations, Poospautuck and Shinnecock.
Approximately 2.65 million people make Long Island their home, and enjoy an outstanding quality of life, a growing economy and outstanding school districts. The area is often ranked as one of the best places to live in the United States by magazines and websites.
